Opgave 2.48 >> 2.73 Solutions Manual
Opgave 2.49 >> 2.74 Solutions Manual
Opgave 2.52 >> 2.80 Solutions Manual

Lenovo Y560p Review (updated May 6th 2012)

So this is my review of the Lenovo Ideapad Y560p. After using it for approximately 1 year, I should say that this laptop is a powerhouse by itself. Ok, lets just say it's a upper mid-range gaming laptop. Check out the specifications below:

The one I'm reviewing is equipped with the new Intel® Sandy Bridge Core™ i7-2630QM quad-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz (up to 2.9 GHz with Turbo Boost enabled) with 6 MB L3 cache, 4 GB DDR3 memory at 1333 MHz, 500GB HDD, a regular DVD-writer and built in Bluetooth receiver/transmitter. Here are a few pictures of the Y560P:

From the moment I opened the box, it was obvious I would be using a beautifully designed upper mid-range laptop!

Design and build:
The Y560p is beautifully designed with a metal like finish on the top and matte black on the bottom. Flipping it open you'll notice the glossy finish on the inside. The touchpad has a stippled texture surface. The rest is just glossy black. The keyboard is nicely build but it doesn't have a full numpad. The Y560p comes equipped with JBL stereo speakers which are placed on the front on both corners. In between are the touch sensitive control keys with which you control the power management, the OneKey Theater and a touch slide button to lock the screen or open shortcuts. The power key is unusually placed on the left side underneath the OneKey Rescue backup button. On the right side you'll find the volume up and volume down above the mute button.

Touchpad:
The touchpad is very sensitive and is gesture enabled. The touchpad keys are the best and most comfortable I've ever used. It has a very soft back press and it's totally the opposite of the one found on the competitors.

Keyboard:
The keyboard is very comfortable to use. Typing is a pleasure. I've had one problem though. The apostrophe and quotation mark key has a glitch. If you press it once you'll notice no input, but pressing another key after that it registers both and thus you'll see both typed keys on the display. But after recently installing Microsoft Office Proofing Tools the problem somehow disappeared. Apart from that it's all fine.

Display:
The Y560p has a 15.6”, 1366 x 768 LED backlit gloss display and comes with the AMD Radeon HD6570M with 1 GB dedicated graphics memory. I wish Lenovo offered a higher resolution display option so I could make even better use of the powerful CPU and graphics card when watching HD video and playing games. But nonetheless the colors are good and very pleasing to the eyes. Very good for watching movies.

Speakers:
The speakers are loud. Well loud enough to listen to music from a room distance. My previous laptop (Compaq Presario 700) also had JBL speakers on it and it was loud and very good for a laptop from 2001. The sound quality is far above the average laptop speakers and delivers quite good sound. Having owned the Presario 700, I know what a good pair of speakers sounds like.

Overall performance:
The Y560p is very snappy and fast! Fast as my AMD Phenom™ II X4 940 3.0 GHz pc. Working on it is a pleasure due to the snappiness. It's so fast I've never really stressed the CPU. I've tried converting a movie file while browsing the internet and listening to music without any lags.

Windows Experience Index:
The Y560p scored a 5.9 in the Windows Experience Index rating due to the 5400 rpm HDD. See the screenshot below:

3DMark11 scores:
The Lenovo Y560p scored a P1232 on the 3DMark11 benchmark test. Check out the screenshot below:

Gaming:
Gaming on the Lenovo is smooth. I've played Crysis 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, COD Modern Warfare 2, Dirt 3, COD Black Ops and The Witcher 2 without any lags. Benchmarked in Dirt 3: 42fps @ 1366x768 with all settings set to high. This isn't a full gaming laptop so don't expect anything like the Asus G-series gamer laptops.

Temperatures:
The Y560p doesn't become that hot even though it's equipped with a core-i7 and a dedicated graphics card. Keyboard doesn't become hot when gaming. Average HDD temperature is approximately 40°C on normal usage. Actually I've never seen the HDD become hotter than 50°C. And average core temperature is approximately 55°C on normal usage (in the tropics where the temperature is usually around 30°C).

Battery life:
The Lenovo comes equipped with a 6 cell battery. Battery life is good. You'll get a 3 hours out of the Y560p with ease from a 100% charge on normal usage. Lenovo included a nice Energy Management software to manage the energy usage. You can simply select your preferable settings to "optimize for battery lifespan" or "optimize for battery runtime". This way the battery won't be overcharged if your working indoors and you have the Y560p plugged in. After one year of usage, when the Y560p is mostly plugged in, with the option set to "Optimize for Battery Lifespan", I must say that this software really gets the job done because I haven't noticed the battery life decreasing! It still can do over 2 hours of usage from an 80% charge (while browsing and listening to music or using MS Office)!

Conclusion:
For the performance vs price vs delivered goods this was the best purchase so far! The Lenovo Ideapad Y560p deserves an 8.5 out of ten score!
